Kevin Day, December 27th, 2008Had some extended downtime due to server troubles that I didn’t have time to fix. Now I’m running this blog on a Slicehost slice instead of my previous “self-hosted” setup. Should be much more reliable and headache-free from now on.

Wow. Looks good.
I need to find a more affordable VPS (or dedicated host) for REALNEO, as well as a faster home for a load of sites that I’m running on a shared plan with BlueHost.
I’ve been looking at MediaTemple and Mosso, but I like the low-end price point and easy scalability that Slicehost offers…

- Jeff Schuler, December 29th, 2008, 2:43 amSlicehost is pretty nice so far. Easy to set up and no problems yet. I was deciding between that and Linode. Sort of arbitrarily chose Slicehost based on comments on Hacker news.
You can use my gmail address as a referral or this referral link.
It looks like you figured that out though and my account page tells me I’ll get a referral credit after I have 3 months under my belt. Thanks!
- Kevin Day, December 29th, 2008, 12:57 pmHeh, yeah, I was pretty anxious to pull the trigger, and since they don’t have any setup fees and minimum durations, I decided to buy their lowest-tier ($20) plan and try it for a month.
It was easy and slick to set up, but I’m not extremely impressed with the speed so far [on the Drupal site I just moved there,] though there’s probably significant gain possible from tuning the AMP stack.
I installed Ubuntu (Hardy) on the slice, as it’s the distro I’m most familiar with, but assume I’d see significant performance improvements with another, and will probably reinstall shortly with CentOS…
- Jeff Schuler, December 29th, 2008, 6:29 pmoof.
Linode sports more bang for the buck. Might have to take advantage of their 7-day money back deal to check them out…
- Jeff Schuler, December 30th, 2008, 6:50 pmLet me know how it goes. I don’t have any performance problems with this (zero-traffic) non-cached WP install on Ubuntu Hardy, but I’m assuming Drupal is much more demanding. I am surprised that it doesn’t run well even with zero traffic though.
